Made to Measure
Graduating Class Showcase. National Institute of Circus Arts. Curators: James Brown, Martine Howard, Benjamin Sheen and Linda Sastradipradja. Artistic Consultants: Katie Cawthorne, Kyall Shanks, Jess Love and Jess McCrindle. 23-26 November, 2022

This Showcase brings together a disparate group of performances to create an entertaining whole by introducing a fashion theme and having Valerie Hex (YUMMY), a well-known and glamorously clad drag artist, be Master of Ceremonies. Valerie introduced the show and provided snippets of engagement and fashion advice to cover equipment changes.

All of the performers were competent and several of them demonstrated they had moved onto to easy and artful performance. Josh Duncan’s work with the Roue Cyr demonstrated artistry, strength and timing. Sophie Bohlsen’s interactions with a doll she constructed on stage evoked an audience sigh and her use of the Roue Cyr was flexible and well balanced. Zachary Stephens’ provided a standout performance based on secure handstands, tumbling and floor work. He introduced effortless buffoonery with well-judged timing and humour.

Aerial work on one (Linda Corazza), and two (Lily Akers) Corde Lisse showcased their strength and flexibility. The aerial hoop (Samantha Daly) and trapeze (Chelsea Hall) were technically strong and introduced some artful elements.

Alanah Hill’s work with hula hoops demonstrated good control and visual complexity and made some use of the audio-visual resources.

The two tightrope artists, Grace Robins and Rindi Harradine demonstrated careful skills with strong and interesting engagement with the tightrope and sought to bring elements of dance and emotion to their performances.

Chris Higgins added dancing to “Hey Pachuko” by Royal Crown Review to his bounce juggling to create a neat and entertaining episode.

The riggers and light and sound technicians provided seamless and effective support.

One performer was unable to complete his work, but professionally managed the situation and the show went on. All of the performers demonstrated the effectiveness of their training and their readiness for the demands of the entertainment industry.
