Lunenburg
At a time when there are quite a few excellent productions on offer in Perth, Harbour Theatre’s production is the best choice for a “feel-good” experience. This warm hug of a production is described as “a romantic comedy with a touch of lust” but might also be described as a bittersweet “almost romance” that touches the heart.
Playing on a very pretty “back porch” set designed by Jarrod Buttery - this set belies the fact that it was literally built in the dark (Harbour have a short bump-in window and it corresponded with a day-long power outage). A nicely dressed set, the production looks good, with effective lighting design from Rob Tagliaferri, and nicely selected costumes. There’s not much in the way of bells and whistles, but this sweet little show simply doesn’t need them.
Making the most of a well-written script (and we can see why Harbour have become very fond of playwright Norm Foster), this small cast have tangible rapport and form an outstanding ensemble. Perhaps not surprising, for Jarrod Buttery and Meredith Hunter who have a long history of playing opposite each other, but the third member of the trio Kate O’Sullivan joined this cast well into rehearsals - and is equally cohesive.
Kate O’Sullivan shows a lovely blend of vulnerability and strength as recently widowed Iris, who travels to Lunenburg to visit a home that she was unaware her late husband owned. Meredith Hunter is loveable as Natalie, who has travelled with Iris as moral support. Jarrod Buttery gives charm to scruffy but likeable local, Charlie, who brings unexpected news for Iris and a touch of romance for Natalie. Great characters whom the audience quickly embrace, there are also lots of laughs in this clever Canadian comedy.
The perfect choice for a mood-lift, this well-acted, nicely produced show is a joy to watch.
