Looped
Looped, a story set on one afternoon, is based on a true story, and tells of a “loop’ recording for actress Tallulah Bankhead’s final film. Presented by Old Mill Theatre, this quality production deserves better audiences.
Played in a sound studio, expertly designed by George Boyd, the lighting, designed by John Woolrych was very supportive, while functional and essential sound design was created by Alan Gill and George Boyd. Properties, and costumes designed by Merri Ford, place us in 1965.
This is largely a two hander, as Film Editor Danny Miller attempts to record a few seconds of Tallulah’s dialogue (the actual task took 8 hours but the play runs a more reasonable two). The third role is that of Steve, a sound technician, which is efficiently played with good humour by Rex Gray.
Kylie Isaia inhabits Tallulah beautifully, with self-assuredness and outstanding vocal impersonation. Glamorous but vulnerable, Kylie gives Tallulah depth and remains likeable despite Tallulah’s infuriating inability to complete the required task. Alan Gill is also excellent, anxious to get the task completed. Tallulah gradually draws more and more of Danny’s background, as he becomes increasingly complex and more interesting. A beautifully drawn and highly emotive performance.
Great teamwork and rapport make this a very watchable play, and high production values support the show with style. Well worth a look.
