With A Little Help From My Friends

With A Little Help From My Friends
Born to Sing Choirs. Directed by Sue Ross. Fringe World. Dress Circle Bar, His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth WA. Feb 2-11, 2017

A rediscovery of the 60s and 70s, With A Little Help From My Friends was presented by Born to Sing Choirs, in their first venture into the Fringe World festival.

The Born to Sing Choirs are situated in Joondalup, Kalamunda, Melville and Rockingham and have over 180 singers in total. This series featured the Joondalup and Rockingham choirs over two weeks.

Spicing up performance blacks with brightly co-ordinated flower-power accessories, the Rockingham choir looked fantastic. The promise of prizes had many audience members dressed in 60s and 70s costumes - a lovely touch and a nice diversion. The songs of their youth for much of the choir and the audience - there was a familiarity and fun nostalgic feel throughout.

The mature age choir sing with beautiful harmonies, a strongly voiced ensemble with lovely tone. The song choice was delightful and ranged from ‘You’re Sixteen’ first performed in 1960, through to 1975’s’ Mamma Mia’. Audience favourites included ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’, ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’ and ‘Delilah’. The choralography was innovative and well executed from a choir with loads of attitude. (Lots of sass in that front row.)

Thank you for the free songbooks with lots of information about the songs and the choirs. The comperes were good fun and brought personality and warmth to the task.

With A Little Help From My Friends was a good deal of fun, with some strong singing. Looking forward to seeing more of Born to Sing at future Fringe Worlds.
