Lewis Major: Triptych

Lewis Major: Triptych
Choreographed and directed by Lewis Major. State of Play and Fringe World. Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of WA. Jan 29 - Feb 2, 2025

Lewis Major: Triptych is a collection of dance works choreographed by Lewis Major with mentors Russell Maliphant and Hofesh Schechter, playing for a short season in the Heath Ledger Theatre as part of State of Play and Fringe World. Visually stunning, innovative choreography is expertly executed.

The first work Two x Three, is choreographed by Russell Maliphant OBE. Featuring music by Andy Cowton, this piece featuring three dancers has outstanding timing and like all the works is lit exclusively from above, mostly in orange - as designed by Michael Hulls OBE. It evokes the feeling of fire or flames.

Unfolding is choreographed by Lewis Major to a composition by James Brown, and again the lighting, this time by Fausto Brusamolino, is stunning - featuring waves of light sweeping the stage, then giving a watery or underwater feel. The four dancers work beautifully together in this longer piece, that captivates its audience.

The final work, Epilogue, is in two parts. Choreographed and costumed by Lewis Major, who also handled the lighting design, it features composition by Dane Yates after Debussy. The first part is a highly athletic, almost acrobatic pas-de-deux involving multiple lifts and gorgeously performed. The second act features dirt or dust that falls from the body of a solo performer, visually striking as she dances and kicks up the dust.

Beautiful dance work that feels fresh and highly innovative - this deserves a bigger audience.
