A Leading Lady in Waiting

A Leading Lady in Waiting
Kimberley Diane. Directed by Geraldine Harris. Fringe World. The Verandah Lounge, Rigby’s Bar, Perth, WA. Jan 28-Feb 1, 2017

Kimberley Diane is well recognised in community theatre circles in Perth, having performed leading roles in companies including Roleystone Theatre, Playlovers, Koorliny Arts Centre and Nine Lives. In this show Kimberley re-visits her favourite leading roles and suggests a few that she would like to play in the future.

The stage is crowded with clothes racks, and as the show progresses, Kimberley strips to a classy black slip, and re-costumes for each new role - in some lovely characterisations. Highlights from the past include singing Jo’s ‘Astonishing’ from Little Women, a lovely rendition of ‘Something Good’ from The Sound of Music as Maria and appearances as Eliza from My Fair Lady and Julia from The Wedding Singer.

As she transforms from character to character, Kimberley Diane chats to her audience, revealing how her passion has developed and sharing little stories about the roles. She demonstrates that her Yr 6 teacher who told her that “People don’t just burst into song" was wrong, and she shares her unique record of having seven Finley Award nominations and being yet to win a title.

Future roles that Kimberley would like to play include Fantine in Les Misérables - and she sings ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ superbly. She very cleverly uses Mary Poppins’ ‘Spoonful of Sugar’ to de-clutter the stage.

The show ends with a surprise and a very clever, super-fast makeover.

A comfortable, fun and easy to watch show. The audience is in secure hands with this confident, highly competent performer and you will have a lovely time enjoying both well-known and rarely performed songs from musicals.
