Labyrinth

Labyrinth
Composed by Evan J Lawson. Libretto by Daniel Szesiong Todd. Produced by Forest Collective, co-presented by Midsumma Festival and Abbotsford Convent. Director: Cathy Hunt. Industrial School and Magdalen Laundry, 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford. 31 January – 8 February 2025.

Labyrinth is an original work which explores the dramatic and traumatic ancient Greek myth of the Minotaur. This is a story that addresses the themes of lust, love, shame and mystery in its deepest and darkest corners. Lawson and Szesiong Todd invoke this sphere via an evocative and moving immersive experience. This is a production which employs dance, movement, opera, and piano concerto. These are all given equal weight and attention allowing the unique artistry of each discipline to contribute to creating a moody and sombre atmosphere.

The location for the staging of this production effectively explores the expanse of the space and the ability to recreate the disorienting effect of a labyrinth. The audience is lured into the performance area and encouraged to abandon themselves physically and psychologically. The dream-like intensity of the music and the electronic soundscape facilitate this process.

The delicate and alluring melodies of the flute (Kim Tan) and the striking tones of the Viola (Alex Macdonald) are enticing and captivating. While the piano (Danaë Killian) conveys the phenomenal and stirring mix of emotions that the figure of the Minotaur elicits. The story of the conception, evolution and tragic destiny of this creature provokes a range of often uncomfortable sentiments, and this is expertly captured in the piano concerto. The powerful reverberations of the vocal energy of Teresa Ingrilli (Ariadne) and Daniel Szesiong Todd (Theseus) are also beautifully complimented by the fluid and graceful dancing by Ashley Dougan and Charlie MacArthur.

This production expertly delivers an exquisite study and examination of a profound and sometimes dangerous emotional introspection.
