Kinky Boots
Kinky Boots! The title tells the tale! This Gold Coast production of the Fierstein/Lauper Broadway hit was a winner with the audience from the start. Lola and her Angels strutted their stuff to the delight of the full house. Many of the audience were so taken in by these guys that they couldn’t believe that they were not real Drag Queens but mere community theatre devotees!
The strong cast is lead by Clay English as Charlie, Abu Keba as the cross-dressing Lola, with Zoe Richards, Madi Jennings, Alex Breen and Phillip Maas, ably supported by over 20 minor principles and chorus, all beautifully dressed by “Red” Nada Kulic.
The star of the show was undoubtedly Abu Keba as the flamboyantly stylish Lola. One puzzled patron was overheard asking “are we watching a lady, playing a man playing a lady” or “a man playing a lady playing a man”?
Director Katie Grace, together with MD Steven Days and choreographers Georgia Beck and Jackson Kook have presented a very entertaining show: from the dark days of the shoe factory facing shutdown to the glittering catwalk of Milan.
Basically with one main multi-level set with smaller “insets” depicted by lighting and props, the audience felt involved with the shutdown and the thrilled in the success of the “Boot Parade” at the conclusion of the show.
And to top it off all the cast took their bows in high heeled boots – very Kinky!
Spotlight Theatre has had to add an extra performance to the season due to the great demand for tickets, so if you haven’t bought yours yet … good luck!
