JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE!

JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE!
By Robin Goldsworthy. Adapted from the JUST book series written by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton. Red Line Productions / Arts On Tour. Sydney Coliseum, West HQ. July 4, 2023, then touring.

From the moment JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE! begins, the audience is in for an unforgettable ride.

Playwright Robin Goldsworthy has expertly adapted the wildly popular book series by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton for the stage, capturing the essence of the books, packing in humour, chaos, and a touch of zaniness. The result is an absolute joy for audiences of all ages.

James Browne’s stage design immediately immerses the crowd in the wild world of the books. Set in a larger-than-life library with some larger-than-life props, Griffiths and Denton's imaginative and often absurd creations come to life.

The striking visuals and projections create a vibrant backdrop for the hilarious antics that unfold on stage.

Goldsworthy’s writing in JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE! is sharp and clever, staying true to the essence of the book series. The dialogue is packed with puns, wordplay, and clever one-liners that have the audience of all ages laughing while composer Daryl Wallis creates a clever musical element.

The comedic timing of both the script and the cast is bang on. Philip Lynch, Madeline Dona and Ben Huntley deliver jokes and physical comedy with hilarious precision. Their energy is infectious, capturing the youthful spirit of Griffiths and Denton's characters. The chemistry between the actors creates an ensemble that works cohesively and elevates the comedic energy.

Director Iain Sinclair has created a non-stop rollercoaster of humour, with each scene presenting a new and ridiculous situation. From outrageous tricks and pranks to chaotic moments of pure silliness, the performance never loses momentum, and the exaggerated movements only add to the hilarity.
Interactive segments encourage the audience to shout responses, to join in on some of the chaos. This inclusion reinforces the immersive nature of the show and enhances the overall experience. When asking my 10-year-old companion, it was her favourite part. Kiddos live for an immersive experience and fart jokes.

As a reviewer, the school holidays always present a delightful program to take my 10-year-old theatre buff to, and we loved this one. It is a treat to see the world premiere at home in the beautiful Colosseum in Sydney’s West.

JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE! is an uproarious and unforgettable theatrical experience. This adaptation captures the humour, chaos, and imagination that has endeared the books to millions of readers. The outstanding performances, clever visuals, and bang-on writing all contribute to a production that will leave audiences of all ages in stitches.
