Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
By Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Primadonna Productions. Directed by Carole Dhu. The Pinjarra Civic Centre, WA. Feb 14-15, 2024

Primadonna Productions’ Youth burst into technicolour action for this high-energy and heartfelt production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Featuring a large cast ranging from 7 to 18, with first timers to old-hands, this was a warm production with a family feel.

Featuring projections and simple settings, fabulous costumes from Carole Dhu and Tammy Peckover added colour and flair, as did bold lighting choices from lighting designer Steven Jones.

Matilda Ellis was a loveable and beautifully voiced Joseph who anchored the show well, with the narration skilfully shared by the talented Bronwen Jones, Izzy Pritchard and Josie Fahl, moving the show along nicely.

Max Bonner gave gravitas to father Abraham. Great work from the eleven brothers including Asher (a wonderfully accented Darien Peckover) leading ‘Those Canaan Days’ and Naphtali (Bonnie Creelman) leading ‘Benjamin Calypso’. Addison Martin as Benjamin was wonderfully sympathetic.

Chris Davis was a convincingly pompous Potiphar with Poppy Warburton having fun as his cheating spouse.

Sisters Josie and Stephanie Fahl were strong as The Butler and ill-fated Baker. Bianca Franklin worked hard in the dual roles of Reuben and Pharaoh.
Lots of hard work from the ensemble cast with focus throughout and great cameos including sheep, stars, corn and prisoners.

An uplifting story, expertly told and a joy to watch.
