Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical
Impromptunes - The Completely Improvised Musical has been a regular Fringe World feature for over a decade, with the Impromptunes team creating a completely new musical at each performance - performed for the first and last time.
Seeing them again after a few years, the team has become even more relaxed in the format, improvising with seeming ease from an audience suggestion. The title on the final evening of this year’s run was Conference of the Dolphins, which became a wild cap adventure, with a variety of songs, about saving the dolphins, which had us travelling from Rottnest Island to the Mississippi River (mysteriously now flowing through Texas - not one of the 10 states it actually touches).
Clever characterisations from environmentalists and dolphins to an evil Colonel KFC, with a hint of naughtiness and some great leaps between scenes, the team work expertly as a team, with some fun group choreography.
The lineup at the final show was Emmet Nichols, Brenna Glazebrook, Brenton Gardiner, Isabella Valette and Stephanie Beza, all Melbourne based, although Emmet originally hails from Perth. They were very skilfully accompanied by Melbourne based Jim Sherwill on keys and local boy Jack Duffy on drums, both improvising with ease.
A fabulous choice when making up your Fringe List for next year, Impromptunes is improvisation at its best.
