I am Playing Me
I am Playing Me is about the way that musical theatre performers find that musical theatre songs seem to resonate with their lives. A great way for people to start their Fringe World Festival experience, I Am Playing Me, presented by Arise Productions, ran for just two early evening sessions on the first two days of this Fringe season.
Three very solid musical theatre performers, with a shared history and plenty of personality, worked together to present an hour of well-curated, nicely performed musical theatre entertainment. David Gray, Bec Pearce and Ryan Dawson perform a mixture of solos, duos and trios - with my personal favourite being Bec’s rendition of ‘Musical Theatre Boys’.
They are backed by another great musical theatre trio - Mia Brine on piano, James Vinciullo on bass and Jasper Emmit Miller on drums. Connections’ sound system can be tricky for vocalists - and on opening night, the balance tended to favour the musicians - a shame as this show’s songs included many with very clever lyrics.
I am Playing Me is a great concept, with three likeable, talented performers. It would be great to see a revival or a sequel to this show in the future.
