Making its Queensland debut at the Ipswich Civic Centre, Broadway smash hit musical Head Over Heels captivated the opening-night audience from start to finish. The romantic comedy is based on The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, a tale from the 1500s that explores themes of patriarchy, gender, and love across the spectrum. Despite its centuries-old premise, the show is strikingly modern, resonating well with contemporary audiences.

Head Over Heels is a jubilant story of finding paradise through finding oneself. The characters’ physical journeys mirror their personal quests for self-discovery and unconditional love. Each ultimately finds true happiness when they embrace their authentic selves. This universal theme of non-judgemental self-acceptance is timeless, adding depth to the comedic and musical spectacle.

The music and lyrics, penned by the legendary all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, infused the show with an infectious energy and passion. 1980s hits including We Got the Beat, and Our Lips Are Sealed, along with The Go-Go’s lead singer Belinda Carlisle’s classics Heaven is a Place on Earth and Mad About You, perfectly complement the narrative’s trajectory. The wonderful musical direction by Nicholas House, coupled with a live band, deserves high praise.

Jennifer B Ashley's choreography was excellent, seamlessly blending with the narrative style and the cast's abilities. Each dance number was a perfect fit, enhancing the overall experience. Director Timothy Wynn should be applauded too for the adept staging of the show and for fostering an environment that encouraged the cast to take fun, bold risks. The entire cast was evidently well-rehearsed and deeply dedicated to the show’s success. The result was a polished, high-energy performance that left the audience thrilled.

Several performances deserve special mention. William Kasper (Musidorus), Josh Whitten (Dametus), Ella Jaz Macrokanis (Philoclea), Nykita O’Keeffe (Mopsa), Erika Naddei (Pamela), and Henry Kafoa (Basilius) delivered standout acting work. Vocal highlights came from Henry Kafoa, Ella Jaz Macrokanis, Nykita O’Keeffe, and Erika Naddei, whose singing was exceptional. The charismatic Peter Wood (Ensemble/Alternate Pythio) was a particular standout in an ensemble that was brimming with plenty of talent.

Head Over Heels at the Ipswich Civic Centre was a triumphant production, blending important themes with energetic music and brilliant comedic performances. This rom com not only entertained but also inspired, reminding us that true paradise can only be achieved when we embrace our own and others’ authentic selves.
