Gypsy
Babirra Music Theatre's recent production of Gypsy at The Round was a dazzling showcase of talent and passion. This timeless musical, with its iconic score and captivating story, was brought to life with stunning performances, exquisite costumes, and a masterful orchestra.
The heart of the show, and indeed the entire musical theatre world, is the character of Gypsy Rose Lee. Lizzie Matjacic's portrayal of Rose was nothing short of extraordinary. Her powerful vocals, particularly during her rendition of "Rose's Turn," was a highlight of the evening. Matjacic's ability to channel the fiery, ambitious Rose was both captivating and inspiring.
Natalie Carden also delivered a standout performance as Louise. Her transformation from awkward teenager to confident burlesque star was beautifully executed. Her vocals were strong and expressive, and her stage presence was magnetic.
Even though only appearing in Act 1, Zoe D'Alessandro's June was a force to be reckoned with. Her energetic performance, combined with her impressive vocal abilities and captivating dance moves, brought the character to life.
The entire cast, from the seasoned performers to the rising stars, gave exceptional performances. The ensemble numbers were energetic, engaging, and filled with nuance and emotion.
The production's technical elements were equally impressive. The orchestra, under the direction of Glen Barnett, provided a rich and dynamic sound that perfectly complemented the score. The costumes were stunning, capturing the glamour and glitz of the 1930s. The sets were imaginative and evocative, creating a believable world for the characters to inhabit.
While the show ran late, the audience was clearly enthralled from beginning to end. The rapturous applause at the conclusion was a testament to the quality of the production. Babirra Music Theatre has once again raised the bar for amateur theatre. We eagerly await their next production.
