Gypsy
Stirling Players' Gypsy played to full houses throughout its three week run, and deserved its warm reception.
Celeste Underhill did a superb job directing her first community theatre musical, and was ably supported by musical director Krispin Maesalu-heading a solid 13 piece orchestra and choreographer Amber Southall, whose work throughout was impressive.
Claudia Van Zellar was a powerful Mama Rose, in her first leading role, producing one of the most outstanding breakthrough performances of 2015. She was ably supported by Trevor Preston as Herbie, whose performance was gentle, solid and believable.
Madeleine Shaw, in the title role, made an impressive transition from shy, awkward, teenager to confident star of the strip tease — and sang the role beautifully, while Dainty June was given depth by Tania Morrow. Their duet, 'If Mama Was Married' was a highlight.
The children were delightful. Bella Freeman and Phoebe Tennant (I was lucky enough to see both), shone as Baby June, in very different portrayals, while Mia Martin and Caitlin Knock were both lovely as Baby Louise. The remaining children, Elle Simpson, Charlie Martin and Bailey Jubb are all talents to watch.
"You Gotta Get A Gimmick" is often a highlight in this musical, and the strippers Helen Marshall (Mazeppa), Paula Sayers (Tessie Tura) and Janet Brandwood (Electra), did not disappoint in flamboyant, funny performances.
Liam Gobbert made a likeable, charming Tulsa, while Liz Pemberton, David Cosgrove and Tracey Endlebrecht stood out among an enthusiastic well focused ensemble.
This beautifully costumed, well presented production had much to admire, including some gorgeous animal performances and some lovely surprises. A quality production for Stirling Players.
