The Government Inspector

The Government Inspector
By Nikolai Gogol, adapted by David Harrower. Hayman Theatre Company. Directed by Helen Trenos. Hayman Theatre, Curtin University, Bentley, WA. Jul 23-27, 2024

Hayman Theatre Company presented this 1836 Russian classic, in the form of a very modern adaptation by David Harrower. Chosen by director as an acting challenge for Curtin University student actors, the cast have risen to the challenge of this interesting ensemble play.

While the dialogue sets this play in Russia, Setare Mogharebin’s interesting open framed set, and the costumes designed by Adah Hill and Lizzie Martin, while vaguely “historic” do not place us in a clear time frame. Bold lighting choices by Daisy Heath add interest and emotion.

The story of a town in which the people mistake a foppish fraudster for an important government inspector, it features a large cast and a collection of interesting characters.

In the title role, Matt Bilman as the (mistaken) Government Inspector leans into the charade, with a great sense of enjoyment that adds to the fun of the piece. His valet/companion Osip is played with intelligence by Jianing Yu.

The residents of the town have a great sense of community. Jake Lippiatt shows natural authority and good timing as the Mayor, with Ognajana Kovincic sensual as the Mayor’s wife Anna and Bella Baker sweet as daughter Maria.

The townspeople work well together, with Augusta Manowski and Poppy Marinovic delightful as the almost interchangeable Dobchinsky and Bobchinsky. Natasha Fraser is strong in several roles, while Estella Glencross works well as Zemlyanika. Sarah Patroni’s slightly dodgy Postmaster also made an impact. Solid performances from Kailua Mollard, Tom Rankin, Isla Simeoni, Lauren Westphal-Groves and Jarrad Whitehurst.

While this show doesn’t always reach the pace it needs to maximise the humour and madness of the plot, this was an enjoyable production that showcased some impressive developing talent. A great contemporary look at a rarely performed classic.
