Ghosts
It can be a long time between shows in WA, for lovers of Henrik Ibsen, but Melville Theatre Company’s Ghosts was well worth the wait (even allowing for the production opening a week late). A sensitive and finely tuned production, with some outstanding acting performances, this classic play is brought to life with both skill and passion.
A simple but elegant box set gives us a sense of the Alving family’s home and lifestyle, with era and character hints provided in elegant costuming from Michelle Sharp. Clare Talbot gives us a strong and unsubtle lighting plot that adds to a sense of foreboding, with effective sound design and technical operation provided by director Thomas Dimmick - helping to add to the drama.
It is the performances though that really make this show, nicely crafted in a fine ensemble piece. Connie Wetherilt, in her most dramatic role to date, shines as maid Regine, in a beautifully layered performance, clashing with expertise with Zane Alexander’s interesting and well-constructed Jacob Engstrand.
Natalie Burbage is outstanding in the central role of Helene, a very convincing and deep performance that unfolds organically throughout the story. Felix Malcolm is excellent as the tortured and burdened Osvald- with great light and shade, with Grant Malcolm completing the cast with expertise as Pastor Manors.
A must-see for lovers of strong dramatic work, and one of the highlights of the season.
