[ gameboy ]
[ gameboy ], an innovative new dance theatre work by Amy Zhang, is a inimitable fusion of street and contemporary dance styles that thrusts its audience into a dynamic and surreal exploration of life’s challenges. Staged at the Metro Arts as part of the Dance24 festival, this piece boasts a unique blend of dance and performance art inspired by Japanese game shows, video games, and internet culture. Through the personas of two avatars, brilliantly portrayed by William ‘Billy’ Keohavong and Ko Yamada, [ gameboy ] embarks on a journey through increasingly difficult game levels, prompting the audience to reflect on the true nature of success and the consequences of one’s actions.
The performance opens by immediately captivating the audience with its sculptural isolation, pattern repetition and extension, suspension and momentum. The set design and lighting are crafted to enhance the work, creating an atmosphere that oscillates between playful and dystopian. The surreal moments and quirky humour interspersed throughout the performance add layers of depth and intrigue, ensuring that the audience remains engaged and curious about what lies ahead.
Keohavong and Yamada, two of Australia’s most sought-after dancers, bring an extraordinary level of focus and skill to their roles. Their chemistry on stage is palpable, showcasing a level of trust and mutual understanding that is essential for a performance of this nature. Their breathwork, turnout, and body awareness result in movements both precise and resilient, reflecting a deep commitment to the work and to each other.
The choreography in [ gameboy ] is both innovative and demanding, pushing the dancers to their physical limits while maintaining a focus that is engaging. Zhang’s creative vision is evident in every aspect of the show, from the playful yet thought-provoking concept to the eclectic music choices that perfectly complement the on-stage action. The soundscape, much like the visual elements, is a delightful mix that enhances the overall experience, making the performance as audibly amusing as it is visually stunning.
[ gameboy ] is a unique work that brilliantly combines street and contemporary dance to create a captivating and thought-provoking experience. It is a testament to Amy Zhang’s vision and the exceptional talents of Keohavong and Yamada. [ gameboy ] epitomises innovative performance art, and leaves a lasting impression long after the final bows.
