On a First Name Basis
Canadian playwright Norm Foster has becoming very popular in Perth during the past few years, with this play. On a First Name Basis, its second Perth season. This is a heartwarming two-hander about a mystery writer and his long-term housekeeper.
A production with high production values, set designers and constructors, Jay Shaw, Ken Macleod, Sean Bullock and Melissa Cooper have created a cosy sitting room that looks intellectual and expensive but cosy and well-lived-in. Costumes are appropriate for character and Alex Tickner has created supportive lighting and sound design.
The characters, although he, David Kilbride, does not recall his employees first name, have an easy familiarity of having worked in close proximity for several decades. This is even more impressive given that the actor playing David, Jarrod Buttery, came into the production only three weeks before opening night, as the previous actor had left the production. Jarrod has played this role before, for Harbour Theatre, but returning to the role after several years, even with shortened rehearsal time, he has a quiet assuredness and inhabits the character more completely and with greater nuance than he did the first-time round. A fine portrayal.
Sharon Menzies is delightful as Lucy Hopperstaad and shows a genuine affection for the man she has cared for, almost thanklessly, for many years. Both actors handle extensive exposition with great ease, in loveable and charming performances.
A challenging production that had its audiences involved and entranced. On a First Name Basis was a lovely way for KADS to close their 2025 season.
