Filter Fun Park

Filter Fun Park
By Amy Fortnum with music by Ashlee Clapp. Bright Side Productions / Fringe World. Directed by Any Fortnum. Amphitheatre, Yagan Square Perth, WA. Jan 21-27, 2024

Filter Fun Park is a fun, educational musical for kids that teaches the importance of healthy eating and making good, balanced food choices. Performed by Bright Side Productions from a commission by Filter Your Future, this allegorical tale is performed out of doors, allowing families to bring a picnic and relax.

Comparing the human body to a theme park, our body is presided over via Brian Brain, but can he and his fellow workers keep the fun park working if he lets in the wild and unpredictable packaged foods from Aisle 9? This musical journey includes some fun choreography (from Amy Fortnum) and lots of opportunities for the audience to get involved. The small preview audience at the first performance were a little reluctant to get involved, but I am sure with greater numbers, this aspect will really fly.

The cast are a mix of highly enthusiastic and energetic adults and children. Jake Tolich is a delight as Brian Brain, who has the biggest learning journey in the show. Nicole George brings warmth and intelligence to Maisel Mouth. Ruby Voss brings heart to Heather Heart, while Grace Whitney and Ethan Battle bounce nicely off each other as the kidney twins. Ethan Churchill is great fun both as the break-dancing Stanley Stomach and the dreaded Damien Dialysis.

The children in the cast are well-directed, focused and deliver impressive performances. Fabulous work from the healthy choices Lillian (Egg), Taylor (Tomato) and Olivia (Lettuce), while the Processed or Sometimes Foods are clearly having fun being the bad guys (of sorts) with Arian (Chip), Pippa (Cake) and Mia (Ice cream) all delivering great performances.

With bigger audiences and more audience involvement, this show is really going to hit its strides, and its low price point makes this an accessible as well as fun and informative Fringe Choice for families.
