Everything and Nothing
Musical Theatre fans could only be delighted with this presentation of Luke Di Somma’s well-crafted songs, delivered with Luke’s introductions and piano accompaniment by very competent and engaging singers.
The songs spoke about Luke’s personal emotional involvements while making pithy comments on current social expectations and the impacts of life’s changes. “Calgary” (Stephen Mahy) opened the show and set the scene for the intimate, poignant revelations to follow. The next song, “Chemistry” (Isla Brentwood), revealed Luke’s funny command of language while reflecting on relationships. An insight into how life presents opportunities for personal growth, “Childish Things” was sung by Finley Brentwood. All of the songs had these elements as Luke shared his insights on people becoming parents, “Capable” (Andrew Coshan), housemates, “Living with a Drag Queen” (Luke Di Somma, Aubrey Halve & Gloss), surviving loneliness and lockdowns, “Neither Here Nor There” (Andrew Coshan) and the search for a mate, “Stuck” (Bailey Dunnage).
The songs ranged from close to recitative, “Phoebe the Life Coach” (Luke Di Somma), through overtones of the blues “What’s It All Worth?” (Milo Hartill), to a charming and funny patter song, “That’s All I’m Asking For” (Teagan Wouters). At times the unexpected subtle modulations and resolutions within the music, “Go to the Bridge” (Isla Brentwood) brought reinforcement to the emotion and meaning of the songs.
The final song, “Colours”, sung by the company, summed up the evening with a reflection on the changes life can bring.
