Duckpond

Duckpond is a mesmerising and enchanting theatre production that invites audiences into a whimsical world where the magic of nature comes to life on stage, unfolding in a captivating display of artistry and storytelling. 

The group have re-imagined the world’s most romantic ballet, Swan Lake, with circus artistry, taking the stage at one of Sydney’s newer theatre spaces, Coliseum Theatre, Rooty Hill. Told in 3 acts with no interval, this story is about forbidden love, transformation, love heartbreak and acceptance. 

The production opens with a soft, ambient soundtrack and a bare stage with strips of curtains whispering in the breeze from floor to beyond. 

The heart of the production lies in its talented cast of 10 performers who bring the charming characters of the duckpond to life with masterful physical storytelling and expressive movements. Through a seamless blend of physical theatre, dance, mime and acrobatic skill, the actors embody the essence of the ducks, moving with grace and precision (and sometimes in yellow overalls) to convey their emotions and interactions with each other. The actors' commitment is evident in every gesture and expression.

One of the most striking aspects of Duckpond is the choreography, which is reminiscent of the graceful ballet seamlessly transitioning between moments of playful splashing in the water to serene gliding across the stage and moving to acrobatics, pushing bodies to the limit leaping, climbing, crawling, stretching, twisting and twirling creating a visually stunning and dynamic performance. 

The lighting and sound create a rich, atmospheric world that complements the performers' movements. Soft, warm lighting bathes the stage in a golden glow, evoking the feeling of a lazy afternoon by the pond, while subtle sound effects of quacking ducks and rustling reeds and the classic soundtrack of Sean Lake. 

As the story unfolds, the universal themes of family bonds, friendship, and the importance of cherishing moments of togetherness. A poignant pas de deux between two of the ducks is performed with exquisite grace and emotion that captures the essence of love and connection.

The production draws to a close; the audience is swept away on a journey of imagination and beauty. Duckpond by Circa is a testament to the power of theatre to transport us to fantastical worlds and touch our hearts with its poignant storytelling. As the audience spilled out of the theatre, it was clear that the audience of all ages had a terrific time.
