A Doll’s House Part 2

A Doll’s House Part 2
By Lucas Hnath. Directed by Caroline Stacey. Presented by The Street. The Street Theatre, Acton, Canberra. June 14 – 23, 2019

“I’m not that same person who left through that door” – Nora

What if Nora came back? What would people say? And what could possibly draw her back to the house, scene of so much said and unsaid in A Doll’s House by Ibsen? This play brings back characters we thought we knew, and challenges what we imagined happened after Nora left.

Caroline Stacey’s direction has led to a fine production, with high values shown in the acting, staging, lighting and sound. All elements work together to create a jewel of a play.

Rachel Berger plays Nora, and her pivotal role is brilliant, drawing the eye and pulling at emotions. Camilla Blunden plays Anne Marie, the first household member to see Nora when she returns, and her fear and joy are perfect.  PJ Williams is a believable Torvald, especially at the end where his dramatic range is further extended by the script. Lily Constantine plays Emmy, at once youthful and precocious, yet wounded by history.

Lighting design by Gerry Corcoran is imaginative, fitting with the five scenes of the play and imaginatively complementing the stage design by Imogen Keen. Sound design is by Kyle Sheedy. Costume design, also by Imogen Keen, is based upon late nineteenth century fashion, while declaring intent through colour and movement.

Congratulations to The Street for a quality production that will remain in the memory long afterwards.
