Do I Look Like I Care?
Do I Look Like I Care? is an offbeat medical comedy presented by bear hands co for State of Play at Fringe World. Set in 1982, immigrant nurse Florence tries to find her place in a Perth hospital.
Fast paced and vibrant, this is almost a series of vignettes as we follow Florence (known as Flo) through her first two years in Perth, through a series of odd experiences, several hospital wards and her home in nurses’ accommodation as we meet a collection of strange patients and staff.
Writer Daisy Coyle plays central character Flo, anchoring the show well, with the remainder of the cast all playing multiple roles. Particularly memorable characters include Lucy Eyre’s seemingly stern sister, Courtney Henri’s initially unfriendly nurse, Anna Lindstead’s sweetly vague nurse Phyllis, Domenic Scriva’s clueless doctor, Ryan Marano’s surprising parking inspector, Courtney Cavallaro’s excitable mother and Juliett Greenock’s loveable thirteen-year-old patient.
Clear direction and super fast transitions (often deliberately at the expense of believability) keep the show rollicking along while fun characters keep the audience invested. Although there are recurring story-lines - a stronger through line would have helped this show be even stronger. Daisy Coyle is a writer to watch - with lots of potential.
While unlikely to be life changing, Do I Look Like I Care? is an easy to watch, fun little romp that will keep its audience engaged and leave them smiling.
