Disenchanted
Disenchanted is an enchanting and dynamic look at the Princess Complex, as a bunch of familiar princesses give us the down and dirty on the princess experience in a cool and quirky cabaret.
The show is led by Snow White, a bit of a queen bee, who could easily take down Regina George and the Heathers. Beautifully crafted and powerfully sung by Cassie Skinner, she steers the show with feminine ferocity in a powerhouse performance. Her offsiders are wonderful. Georgia McGivern is an adorably ditzy Cinderella, an audience favourite, whose shifting facial expressions are a delight. Imogen Rabbite completes the leading trio with a lovely, possibly narcoleptic Sleeping Beauty, who leads a ‘perfect’ penultimate production number.
Great performances from Andrea Lim, whose Mulan makes an amazing realisation and Jess Lally, as a rednecked Little Mermaid and formidable Rapunzel. Delicia Cooper delights as a powerful Princess that Kissed The Frog, while Therese Cruse owns Pocahontas and performs a wonderful jazz number as Princess Badroulbadour (aka Jasmine). Sharon Kiely was an impressively unhinged Belle, and our only disappointment was that she did not have more stage time.
The singing was strong, and accompanied by a three piece band led by Musical Director Madison Moulin. Choreography by Anita Telkamp continues the comic theme with some great touches, and is well executed.
A gloriously girl power show, this is a wonderful experience for anyone who grew up loving princesses. A great choice for a girls’ night out (although the men loved it too), this is an adult comedy that has great messages but is mostly just a fun time.
