The Disappearing Act

The Disappearing Act
By Maria Angelico. Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The Malthouse, Playbox. Apr 2 – 24, 2022

The Disappearing Act is a fabulous one-woman comedy show by Maria Angelico, who has recently acted on Australian screens in the ABC series The Newsreader and New Golden Mountain on SBS. Angelico delves deep into her life resources and pulls more than your average white rabbit out of her hat. This is a hilarious all smoke and mirrors true story.

Angelico pops out of a chest, playing on the vintage magic shows of yesteryear. Her boss has absconded and left her to her own devices. Angelico takes the mickey out of her role as the sexy bunny assistant, decides to play a modern day “mind penetrator mentalist” to fill in time while the sound guy, down the back of the room, tries to track down the “real live act”.

While working her personal magic as a crowd warmer, her real story unfolds. When her mother was working as a cabaret performer, she fell pregnant to a local magician. When Maria was born, her father disappeared; embittered by his vanishing act she precedes to track him down via the posters she sees around town.

Magic or no magic, the spell has been cast and we the audience are mesmerised by her charming and witty life story. Angelico is a natural and look forward to seeing more of her routines on the comedy circuit.
