Deafinite Connection
Deafinite Connection is a moving and important production which features three deaf and three hearing performers, in a production aimed at deaf and hearing audiences. It shares some of the experiences of our local deaf community and aims to strengthen relationships between the deaf and wider communities.
Director, writer and co-ordinator Peter Blockey grew up deaf in a hearing family, and was not exposed to Auslan until he was 11. Deafinite Connection explores Peter’s story and those of the other performers. One of the themes is how the world of the deaf community is growing, thanks to the opportunities offered by modern society.
Very much a multi-media production Deafinite Connection uses conventional theatrical techniques in short skits, but also video, signed songs, dance, movement and direct address in order to tell the story. Two interpreters are used - one to translate spoken word to Auslan and the other to Auslan interpret the words - the spoken language.
All of the performers are affable, expressive and likeable. Deaf performers were Anne Borley, Scott Warner and Peter Blockley. Their hearing cast-mates, all of whom were already Auslan students, were Aimee Kunnen, Daniela Begg and Sam Barnett.
Great to see a production that is a cross cultural experience from a community within our own. Fascinating and moving, it kept its audience engaged despite a very warm room and a struggling air-conditioner which for hearing patrons was roughly the nice levels of a departing passenger plane. Occasionally a little rough-around-the-edges, this just added to its charm and honesty.
Would love to see this return in future Fringe World seasons. A must see for those who prefer to watch Auslan Interpreter Fiona Perry rather than Mark McGowan during press conferences and those curious about Perth’s deaf community.
