Curtain Up
Curtain Up is a bit of a twist on the “backstage play” (for which this author is particularly renowned), as five women inherit a rundown theatre.
Nicely directed, and performed with relish, this simply set play had a very short season at the Pinjarra Civic Centre. Featuring a cast that clearly had an excellent rapport, this is a slightly madcap story of a diverse group of women that are forced by circumstance to get along.
Bella Lambert played central character Teresa, whose late father Michael was the link between the women. Bella was excellent as this earnest and grieving young woman determined to save the theatre in honour of her father. Karen Godfrey was strong and convincing as Teresa’s mother Pam in continual conflict with Michael’s second wife Jackie, an attractive trophy wife played with skill by Sian Dhu.
Carole Dhu was delightful as Michael’s mother Betty, while Gemma Little completed the quintet with comic flair as Michael’s punkish former employee Sharon.
The show flowed well, with the stage transforming from dilapidated to performance ready, with the help of some good quality projections and some effective lighting designed by Grace Crawford. A jaunty sound design was provided by Michael Rogers.
One of this year’s tighter ensemble casts, this warm and funny comedy was warmly appreciated during its brief season.
