The Critic
The Critic is a hilarious new comedy about the theatre world by the award winning writer Gabriel Bergmoser, from the innovative team at Bitten By Productions. These guys are set on delivering quality, thought-provoking material to their growing audiences.
Jamie (Seon Williams) is a professional theatre critic. Her editor Susan (Michelle Robertson) is a tough cookie. When Jamie requests to review her friend’s new show, hidden agendas and ugly back-stories are revealed. Jamie hates Emma’s (Hayley Beveridge) show and spends a drunken woeful time with her friend Ellie (Ayesha Gibson) discussing the trappings of friendship.
Bergmoser has created a beautiful fusion of honesty, friendship and how masking the truth can snowball into a succession of nasty revenge tactics. Jamie, guided by her own misjudgment, realizes that impressing the editor in fear of loosing her job doesn’t always work. Emma is hell bent on destroying Jamie’s reputation but time heals wounds and the ugly lessons of life are learnt.
The Critic delivers clever comic timing that is well orchestrated under the direction of Rose Flanagan. She has cast four talented female actors who provide flawless robust characterization of the press and theatre people. It would be great to see the play on a bigger platform, as it would free up the actors performance. Regardless, The Critic is a fresh and insightful study of the rancid back biting community of creatives.
