Crème de la Crème

Crème de la Crème
Adelaide Fringe Festival 2022. The Vault at the Garden of Unearthly Delights - Adelaide. February 18 – March 19, 2022.

Crème de la Crème is presented by Head First Acrobats, who have previously presented Circus’cision and Railed.

This production focusses on the performers’ skills and less on a theme. It is a cornucopia

of acrobatic skills beautifully linked by the host Cal Harris, also a skilled acrobat. His chair balancing act perched precariously on five stacked chairs aided by his assistant is one of the highlights of the night!

After an opening routine based on making and consuming cocktails while balancing on each other’s shoulders, the boys from Head First Acrobatics proceed to demonstrate why they are the best in the business.

There are many skills featured that we have come to expect in a circus style production - aerial straps, acro-balance, adagio, contortion and hooping. Local boy Jordan revives the little seen art of the diabolo at an unbelievable speed, culminating in juggling three diabolos, sending them soaring up into the heights of ‘The Vault’.

Other highlights are Mr Finale, with an unidentifiable European accent, showcasing an amazing display of slapstick and skill with just a touch of nudity to rev the audience up; two topless male acrobats on aerial straps, individually accomplished, but amazing to watch when working together to demonstrate skill, strength and mutual trust and an unbelievably agile mullet wearing bogan, who shows us how to eat a sausage roll while contorting his body into impossible positions and hanging from his teeth!

While I enjoyed the production immensely (as did the audience) I could not help but miss the thematic nature of Head First Acrobats’ other shows.

That being said, Crème de la Crème is a stellar night out! It is funny, cheeky, daring and an essential inclusion to your Fringe Program!
