Consistency is Key: A Story of Redemption
Consistency is Key: A Story of Redemption is a newly devised cabaret show by third generation calisthenics girl Morgan Dooley-axup. After years in competition, winning only a succession of second bests, she’s decided to shed light on living the impossible dream, and her family of “calie loosers”.
Honest, loud and in your face, Dooley–axup generously shares her calisthenics experiences with her audience. She moves to her own beat and, singing with beaming confidence, delivers a fine choice of pop and musical songs with a strong resonating voice. She prances around with flamboyant ease while jibing with her piano player (Peter Verhagen) to also play her devil’s advocate.
She berates her family, speaks tacky truths, changes into her overpriced bling lycra dresses and reflects on the agony of being primped for the finals. The rigour of competitive calisthenics, in a similar vein to American Beauty Pageants, sees parents making selfish decisions for their children, lured by prize money and kudos.
While there may be a few teething problems, Dooley–axup has created a performance where the ideas and the talent are clear, vivid and exciting. It would be great to see stronger comic by-play with her piano player.
