The Complete Show of Water Skiing

The Complete Show of Water Skiing
By Medina Dizdaravić. Directed by Laura Liu, The Blue Room Theatre, Perth Cultural Centre, WA. Feb 8-12, 2022

The Complete Show of Water Skiing is a wildly unlikely tale, but a beautifully told story, well presented and acted.

When Jenwin finds a book entitled The Complete Book of Water Skiing amongst her recently departed grandfather’s possessions she decides to honour his memory by learning to water ski. Enthusiastically supported by her two best friends, the trio find themselves entered in a competition, despite their lack of experience and equipment.

The characters are beautifully drawn and expertly fleshed out by three high energy performances. Jenwin is portrayed with lovely ring-of-truth mannerisms by Zendra Giraudo; Lilly, far-from-home uni student is given credence by Chrystal Nguyen, while Abison is endowed with oodles of energy and enthusiasm by Lucy Wong.

The unapologetic and essential Asian-ness of this production was great to see and added some lovely moments of humour.

Brilliant physicality abounded as the girls learnt to water ski on dry land, with excellent choreography by Zendra Giraudo and “swim coaching” by Hannah Davidson. The physical humour was well supported by sound design by Donita Cruz.

This is a simply staged show, but it looks great, with some fun use of props, lovely set and costume design by Fiona McDonald and supportive lighting design by Katrina Johnson.

The Complete Show of Water Skiing is a sweet and funny feel-good show that leaves its audience smiling.
