Comma Sutra
Somewhat of a Fringe World stalwart, Comma Sutra has had sold out seasons at five previous Fringe World festivals, and having not seen it since 2017, I went back for another look, at its sold-out single performance.
This gorgeous celebration of language, especially the quirks of grammar, is tailor made for the people who shudder when they see someone selling ‘potato’s’ or literally misusing the word ‘literally’.
Accompanied with charm and humour by Greg Lavell, Louisa works beautifully with her audience, improvising with expertise and making the show personal and unique at each performance.
Nerdy and pun filled, Comma Sutra is hilariously funny and features excellent original songs as well as clever satire, with highlights being “Grammar Makes Me Hot” and the finale, “What a Wonderful World”. sung in four languages (English, Auslan, German and French), switching on cue as decided by audience members.
After ten years, this show remains fresh and fun, although the now married Louisa is no longer searching for a nerdy man to whisper sweet nothings into her ear in multiple languages.
I am hoping that Louisa, who started her career in Perth, will continue to bring this show home for years to come.
