Cirque Bon Bon

Cirque Bon Bon
Developed by Ash Jacks and Julieann Nugent. Choreographer: Julieann Nugent. Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street Melbourne. 11- 13 July 2024

Cirque Bon Bon is sparkly, slick, funny and entertaining and leaves the audience grateful for the extreme skills and mastery of the performers. What a range of skills are displayed!

The master of ceremonies, Mario, Queen of the Circus, complete with fake French accent, big moustache and studded leather outfit singlehandedly involves audience members with charm and gentle humorous irony in unicycling with a twist, a banana duel and playing air guitar and leading the audience singing the Queen song, 'We Are The Champions'. He is off the stage most of the time, but his presence holds the show together.

The star acts are interspersed with Jayden Grogan, Holly Soper, Hunter-Jai Clist and Tiara Locke displaying their athletic and dancing skills. They allow the audience to take a breath and get ready for the next extraordinary display.

Two amazing contortionists, Shannen Michaela and Ashleigh Roper both stunned the audience with their skills. Ashleigh Roper showed off her flexibility on the Aerial Hoop and with Hula Hoops. Shannen’s contortions are astonishing, and the audience grasped and groaned as she contorted her body. She also did her signature move of shooting a balloon with a bow held with her feet which were above her head at the time. The applause was thunderous.

Emma Goh and Scott Lazarevich worked together to do feats of strength and balance and in the finale added roller skates. Cody Harrington added classic juggling where his hands moved more quickly than the eye could follow. Liam Dummer ascended with aerial straps and ended up hanging by a strap held in his mouth.

All of this was done with sureness and smiles backed up with great costumes, and a satisfying lighting and sound show. The audience was in safe hands and gave themselves over to being thrilled which they showed with a constant wave of appreciative clapping and hooting.
