Charlie Caper Robot Magic
Visitors to Fringe World’s The Pleasure Garden could not fall to notice posters for Charlie Caper: Robot Magic on the boards surrounding Russell Square. One of the headline acts at Fringe World, this winner of Sweden’s Got Talent’s show runs for the full length of the Fringe World’s season.
Charlie is a magician who specialises in robotics and technology in line with Arthur C.
Clarke’s statement that “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. There is a lot of fun technology in the show, especially a robot dog, that enchants the audience and is probably worth the price of admission on its own.
A personable performer, Charlie has a very relaxed “we’re flying by the seat of our pants” vibe, rather than the pizazz and glitter employed by most magicians. He is funny in his second language of English, which is no easy feat, and the robotic elements of his magic are excellent.
On the night I viewed, one or two tricks didn’t quite pay off, but it was an enjoyable show with a good atmosphere.
A great choice to close a night at Fringe World, an easy-going show that entertains and is fun.
