The Butterfly Effect
Direct from the UK, Greek comedian George Zacharopoulos returns to Australia for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his show The Butterfly Effect, after winning Best European Performer 2024 at Edinburgh Fringe.
If you are looking for a fast-paced show that will have you gasping for air from laugher, this may be the show for you. Infused with “Greek tragedy”, George takes us on a journey of vignettes with an overarching story of leaving his homeland Greece to study biochemistry in the UK only to discover he would much rather be an artist and disappointment to his conservative family. It’s fish out of water comedy, George emerging from life in a village to the loudness of London.
Complete with Greek hand movements and passion, George dances on the boundaries of political correctness, drawing you in with his endearing Greek accent and slight naivety, explaining with each story how London opened his eyes to his sheltered life and controlling parents. He doesn’t hold back on his commentary about the hypocrisy of Greeks and the ways of the British people – which I loved.
Comedy for those who enjoy challenging the status quo, appealing especially to those who have an immigrant background. Highly entertaining. I will be back when he returns!
