Bugsy Malone
School holiday productions by the Gosford Musical Society Juniors are proving very reliable entertainment. This time it’s the stage version of Bugsy Malone, and the 50+ cast give a full blast of commitment and energy.
The show is derived from Alan Parker’s 1976 movie, with the original composer/lyricist Paul Williams adding more musical numbers. It offers a wide range of acting and singing opportunities for a brave and lively youth group. These Gosford Juniors, well drilled by first-time director Melinda Middleton, are having a whale of a time and their enthusiasm is infectious.
Mounting this show is not for the fainthearted. It needs to move along like a movie, with many short scenes requiring almost constant set and lighting changing. Perhaps a less ambitious staging would have achieved more of a flow, but Middleton goes for an impressive full-stage Speakeasy setting with many (perhaps too many) a trucked piece — door, window, tree, lamppost, desks, even a splendid 1920s automobile. The overall design and painting, under designer Daryl Kirkness, is exemplary.
The young cast, delightfully all shapes and heights, have a great time, with some real potential oozing from the many principals. Gosford Musical Society must benefit from having such a keen crew of juniors ready for future action.
