In Bed With the Bishops
In Bed With the Bishops is a relatively new Australian comedy that is gaining audience approval at KADS Theatre Kalamunda. The story of a psychiatrist dealing with a couple trying to conceive, it is a slightly naughty little tale, written by Melbourne based psychiatrist come playwright Rob Selzer.
Clever set design by the director Karen Woodcock and her husband (who wishes to remain anonymous) allows two office spaces to sit side by side. They are beautifully finished and decorated, and show much of the personality of their respective owners. The set also has a magical surprise element revealed after interval, that works very well.
The cast of four have a lovely rapport. Paul Cook is convincing as central character Jack Glass, frustrated by his clients the Bishops. Lynne Devenish returns to the stage after an eleven-year absence, clearly relishing the role of Jack’s eccentric mentor, Zelda. Carly Ranger brings flair to probably her biggest role to date, as the difficult and controlling perfectionist, Betty Bishop, with Chris Kennedy believable as her gentle, wealthy and handsome husband, Barry. Relationships are nicely established, but at times the dialogue and flow is a little hesitant and stilted.
Nice to see a Western Australian premiere, and one that is fun. A comedy with edge that takes some risks and delivers laughs.
