Barnum The Circus Musical
Barnum is a great opportunity to showcase the depth and breadth of talent which is active and available in the Australian theatrical scene. The production features outstanding performers who often provide astonishing and captivating performances. Todd McKenney plays P.T. Barnum with unabashed enthusiasm. His ability to be responsive to the audience is one of the many delightful ways he exhibits his exuberance. Rachel Beck as Charity Barnum manages to be both stern and compassionate, bringing some complexity to the character. Suzie Mathers does indeed have a voice like a nightingale and is perfectly cast for the role of Jenny Lind. Kirby Burgess as the Ringmaster is especially dynamic as a key presence on stage. She punctuates the story with a great sense of magnificence and shows a great deal of versatility in the range of roles she undertakes.
One of the many strengths of the show is the ensemble cast that comprises highly talented circus performers. They provide much of the colour and spectacular acrobatic feats in the show. The extraordinary examples of circus acts such as juggling and trapeze dazzle and delight the audience. In fact, there are times when the show could have easily given more space and scope to indulge the circus context which is so integral to the story.
The set and costume design is extremely vibrant and intricately detailed and is particularly evocative of the era and setting. Despite its generous structure, the use of stage space seemed somewhat static at times and tended to be defined by a very formulaic approach to action and movement. The bizarre and eccentric atmosphere is beautifully complemented by the rich and emotional musical score. Barnum is undoubtedly a fantastic and energetic theatrical experience that celebrates and enriches the musical genre, as well as providing intense and moving entertainment.
