AWOL: 2 Old Men Escape from a Care Home and Go to A Music Festival is exactly what it says in the title. Presented by Ribbit Re Public Theatre and Weeping Spoon Production as part of State of Play for FringeWorld, this wild action adventure of a play is a hilarious call to growing old disgracefully, superbly acted and a great deal of fun.

Actors Johnathon Paterson, a Canadian, and local favourite Shane Adamczak, not only play our two elderly heroes but a plethora of other characters including a metal band playing granddaughter, an assortment of care home staff, stoners and rockstars, transforming simply with posture, voice and sometimes an item of clothing. The performers are superb, and the well created characters win our hearts.

The show is pacy and at times almost manic, as our heroes escape, their nursing home, staff in pursuit, in order to watch one of their granddaughters play at the festival. Not afraid to venture off script, break the fourth wall and improvise occasionally, which adds to the sense of danger, this dynamic duo of performers has its audience in the palm of their hands.

With the audience featuring many ‘metal heads’ and a great percentage of senior citizens, it is easy to see that this show has broad appeal. Take grandma or the grandkids - AWOL: 2 Old Men Escape from a Care Home and Go to A Music Festival is a delight.
