Art
Art is a fast-paced three hander and it is in the very good hands of three of the best actors in Adelaide in its Verendus Theatrical season. Tracey Walker as Marcia, Alicia Zorkovic as Charlotte and Lyn Wilson as Yvette produced impressive performances and a totally believable story of the ups and downs of friendship.
The staging was simple and the lighting was used to good effect to isolate each of the women in turn as they spoke directly to the audience. Tim Williams’ direction allowed the actors to portray their characters naturally and did not over-complicate the story with unnecessary props or actions.
Walker’s portrayal of Marcia had all the strength and angst necessary for the script, as she portrayed a woman who thought of herself as indispensible to her friends and who was threatened when Charlotte made a big decision without consulting her.
Zorkovic’s Charlotte was independent, feisty, and at the end empathetic enough to understand that Marcia needed her more than she needed Marcia, and for that she was prepared to sacrifice her expensive purchase to redress the situation.
Wilson’s character Yvette constantly tried to mediate between her two friends. Yvette’s telephone conversations about her upcoming wedding brought the house down and resulted in a spontaneous round of applause. It was truly fabulous.
It was a lovely evening out at the theatre and I much preferred it to the State Theatre version I saw many years ago. My only negative was the set, but I am won over by quality acting and a quality script over a ‘thrifty’ set anytime.
Well worth seeing.
