Arj Barker
Arj Barker has been bringing his brand of comedy to Australia for over twenty years. It is fair to say that he has built up a following based on his observations and unique casual delivery. As he walks on stage to rapturous applause he undoubtedly feels the pressure to perform, but does not show it. Barker is comfortable in his surroundings and reads the audience well.
Speaking at a record pace, he does well to make mention of current events, poking fun at our former Prime Minister Tony Abbott; his disdain for the man is evident. Obviously what makes us laugh is subjective, but Barker is clever to tap into topics that are relatable and local. The first half of the show is hysterical; he has the audience in the palm of his hand, but then he starts on a myriad of stories, with no evident punch lines. The pace slows and although entertaining he loses the momentum.
Talking about his new adventure into coupledom and the changes he has endured to please his partner was engaging. His recent change to a gluten free diet was funny at first, but dragged on. Wrapping the show with a song about relationships and other topics he covered during his one hour show was a nice way to end, but left you wanting more.
An enjoyable night out was absent of any real belly laughs, but given Arj’s likeable persona I doubt many would bother to complain.
