Annie Get Your Gun

Annie Get Your Gun
Music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. Old Nick Theatre Summer School. Darren Sangwell (Director). Glenn Schultz (Musical Director). Maddie Smith (Set Designer). Hobart College. February 23- March 3 2018

Annie Get Your Gun is a show this author needed to see twice. Every February, Old Nick, as part of their annual Summer School, produce a high-quality energetic production which never fails to disappoint.

From the moment the big top is raised from the empty stage, this production engages. A simple and versatile set of movable crates is enhanced with thoughtful lighting and an effective soundscape. The ensemble is even and well drilled in choreography which showcases the athleticism of key members and traverses a range of styles. The diction and harmonies of the troupe are accurate and barbershop trio is a highlight. The skilled young orchestra boasts a significant string section.

Despite its age, there is much humour in the show and inherently outdated notions are never endorsed.

There are many wonderful individual performances. Finn Carter as Frank Butler is suave and warm. Cassie Ogle, Dan Prichard and Alec Hastie greatly add to the comedy. But why see it twice?

Martine Holliday.

Her performance as Annie Oakley is assured and mature. She exhibits great physicality and an excellent grasp of comic timing but her voice is compelling. Her vocal range and technique are stunning and she colours her tone without sacrificing character or diction. “I can do anything” is a tour de force and her versatility in softer numbers such as “Moonshine Lullaby” draw the viewer in such a way as to preclude notice of anything else on stage.  Riveting!
