27 Club
Most of us are familiar with the 27 Club, a prestigious but tragic group of musicians and artists who lost their lives at the tender age of 27.
A cross-section of Australian talent graced the stage at ‘Moa’, the newest venue in Gluttony, to pay tribute and 'breathe new life' into some well-known artists. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, and blues legend Robert Johnson were channeled into an hour of high-voltage entertainment.
Indie band The Wanderers, consisting of Dusty and Matt, brought raw musical talent to the stage, starting the evening with ‘Purple Haze’, a Hendrix classic. Joined by Kevin Mitchell of Jebediah and Bob Evans fame, ‘The Superjesus’ former singer/songwriter and quintessential rock-chick Sarah McLeod, and cabaret powerhouse Carla Lippis, song after song was a hit.
In between classic anthems such as ‘Foxy Lady’, ‘Mercedes Benz’, ‘Light my Fire’, ‘Smells like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Back to Black’, to name a few, performers told of the legacy of these legendary musicians and the cause of their demise.
A lounge area set down stage left meant artists stayed on stage in between their numbers, rocking out in appreciation to the endless hits that filled the night sky. The echoes of these past musicians were heard loud and proud, a fitting tribute to a cross-section of musical genres which meant that there was something for everyone.
How fabulous to hear live music again! This is a must-see for music lovers, but hurry, it has a limited season.
