Our Earlier Coverage

Multi award winning musical Next to Normal is coming to Sydney for a strictly limited season at the Capitol Theatre playing from 13 September to 7 October 2012.   Next to Normal is an acclaimed, groundbreaking musical "that pushes Broadway in new directions" (Rolling Stone), won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three 2009 Tony Awards.

The production will star Ian Stenlake, Michelle Doake, Bobby Fox, Ross Hannaford, Dash Kruk and Erica Lovell.

With provocative lyrics, an electrifying contemporary score and more than 30 original songs, Next to Normal explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact.  Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other.

The Goodman’s seem like a perfect family. The only problem is that sometimes mother Diana (Michelle Doake) seems, well...a little too happy, and we soon find out why.  Her husband Dan (Ian Stenlake) worries all the time. Their daughter Natalie (Erica Lovell) is intent on getting a scholarship to Yale and leaving home, whille her friend Henry (Dash Kruk) hopes she might put her "Red Bull" down for a moment and notice he wants to 'go with her'.  And their son Gabe (Ross Hannaford), well...that’s another story entirely.

Next to Normal is a rock musical that follows the life of the suburban wife dealing with a worsening bipolar disorder. It examines how Diana's condition and its treatment, helped by her psychiatrist (Bobby Fox) affects her family, and how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane, and their family's world intact.

Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards including  Best Musical Score, and  the 2010 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Next  to Normal is the most talked about show on Broadway.  It was also  chosen as “one of the year’s TEN best” by major critics around the country including The Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

Next to Normal has music by Tom Kitt, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey.

The production will be directed by Tyran Parke with Kelley Abbey as Associate Director/Musical Staging and Peter Rutherford as Musical Director.
