Stephen Schwartz: Exclusive Interview

Stephen Schwartz and The Mantle of Awesome.

Coral Drouyn talks to composer / lyricist Stephen Schwartz.

I am an unabashed fanatic where Stephen Schwartz is concerned, so much so that I (tongue in cheek) call Sondheim “The Other Stephen”. Ever since Godspell hit our stages back in the early seventies, and changed our view on the form of the musical forever, Mr Schwartz has given us the gift of fabulous musicals – each one different in its structure and production style. Quite simply, he is an awesome composer and lyricist.

Malthouse Theatre Season 2014

It started with a treasure hunt, in keeping with Malthouse Theatre’s reputation for cutting edge innovation. Handed a card with a map upon entering for 2014 Season Launch, we were encouraged to follow a route which revealed to us blood stained clothes, Chinese lanterns, a car, and other clues to the productions being offered next year. It was a novel and amusing way to break the ice for an eclectic crowd made up of students, elderly subscribers, actors and the press.

Belvoir Season 2014

Artistic Director Ralph Myers announced Belvoir’s 2014 season to a gathering of sponsors, subscribers and members of the theatre community in the Belvoir rehearsal room in Surry Hills on election eve.

The season features two versions of Oedipus, makeovers for two of Ibsen’s great heroines, two of the most famous brothers in history and twenty questions.

First up, Oedipus Schmoedipus promises a ridiculous romp through all the great death scenes of the western theatrical canon from post, as part of Sydney Festival.
