NSW Soprano Wins 2011 Australian Singing Competition and Audience Vote

On Sunday 30 October 2011, at the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House, Emma Moore, a 23 year old Soprano from Wollongong, NSW was announced winner of the 2011 Australian Singing Competition, Australia’s Richest Singing Competition. Emma was awarded the Marianne Mathy Scholarship presented by The Premier of NSW The Hon Mr Barry O’Farrell MP. The Compere for the evening was Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini.

New Bob Gaudio for Sydney Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys – The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, which opened at Sydney’s Theatre Royal in September 2010, after 14 months in Melbourne, has its closing night on 18 December 2011. From 15 November until closing night, Declan Egan will take over the role of Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio in his professional theatre debut.

Declan joins cast members Bobby Fox (Frankie Valli) Glaston Toft (Nick Massi) and Ben Mingay (Tommy DeVito).

Rock of Ages Sydney Season Postponed

Was three musicals opening in Sydney in early January just one too many? 

Despite having become one of the longest running musicals to be staged at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne and opening to universal critical acclaim, the producers of  Rock of Ages announced today (October 27, 2011) "that, due to the current economic down turn in Australia impacting on single ticket sales in Sydney, the Sydney season of Rock of Ages, scheduled to preview from 11 January 2012, has been postponed." 

La Boite 2012 Season

La Boite Artistic Director David Berthold has announced La Boite’s 2012 Season, “a year that will pull at the heart, stir the blood and tickle the funny bone”.

The 2012 line-up of 10 productions includes five Mainstage productions and five La Boite Indie productions for the Brisbane company.

“We’ve rhymed some Shakespearean joy with summery Scottish charm, layered a mischievous hoax with a spellbinding puppet, and crowned it with melting verses of tender napalm,” David said.

Sam Strong and Australian Plays in the Making.

Sam Strong has only held the artistic reins at Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company since mid 2010, but after his first season commenced with impressive productions of contemporary Australian classic Speaking in Tongues, and the premiere of new Australian work Silent Disco, Stage Whispers Editor Neil Litchfield sought him out.

Take a Bow, Reg Livermore

Opening November 5, Reg Livermore – Take a Bow is a free exhibition which pays tribute to the career of iconic performer and theatre legend Reg Livermore, applauding his unique contribution to Australian performing arts as an actor and writer.

PUBLIC WARNING OVER ONLINE TICKET SCALPERS

Peak industry body, Live Performance Australia (LPA), today issued a public warning to all Australian consumers to make sure that they only purchased tickets from authorised ticket sellers appointed by the venue or the producer.

2012 Adelaide Festival Theatre Program.

The program for the 2012 Adelaide Festival, from March 2 – 18, has been announced, including an extensive range of international and local theatre. 2012 marks the move for the Adelaide Festival from bi-annual to annual event. The Odéon – Théâtre De L’Europe production of A Streetcar, starring Isabelle Huppert and the Liverpool Everyman production of Pinter’s The Caretaker, starring Jonathan Pryce, are among the exclusive international theatrical highlights.

MELBOURNE TO HOST WORLD PREMIERE OF KING KONG LIVE ON STAGE

In a major events coup for Victoria, the Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher today joined Global Creatures at auditions for King Kong, to announce that the world premiere and only Australian season will take place at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in early 2013.

“This confirms Melbourne’s position as Australia’s favourite destination for great theatre and major events and underscores its international status as a hub of cultural excellence,”Minister Asher said.
