Scarlett Strallen: Globetrotting Mary Poppins

West End performer Scarlett Strallen has stepped into the title role of Mary Poppins for eight weeks, as Verity Hunt-Ballard takes a well-earned break. Neil Litchfield caught up with Scarlett in her dressing room at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney early in her stint in the show.

Scarlett has now taken over the title role of Mary Poppins four times, twice in the West End, on Broadway and now in Sydney.

How does stepping into a role compare with creating it from day one?

Sydney Fringe 2011 Awards for Excellence

The 2nd Annual Sydney Fringe Festival Award-winners were announced and their work celebrated in a ceremony at the Sidetrack Theatre, Marrickville, on November 3.

It does, however, seem a rather long time lapse between the close of Fringe on October 2 and the awards presentations, compared to, say, the 2011 Adelaide and Melbourne Fringe Festivals, where the awards were presented on the closing night of the festival

Festival Director Richard Hull said that more than 70,000 audience-members attended more than 250 events in over 80 venues.

SYDNEY FESTIVAL 2012 THEATRE AND DANCE

The program for the 2012 Sydney Festival, running from January 7 - 29, has been announced.

Sydney Festival includes theatre, dance, music, exhibitions, film and talks that takes over the city, celebrating Australian work as well as welcoming international companies. The Festival features free large-scale outdoor events including concerts and performances.

Cafe Rebetika! Greek Music, Theatre and Dance from the Heart

Cafe Rebetika!,a dramatic love story set in the slums of 1930s urban Greece amongst the rise of rebetika, the "Greek blues," is conceived and directed by Stephen Helper. He’s best known as the co-creator of the Broadway hit Smokey Joe’s Café. Neil Litchfield caught up with him.

NSW Soprano Wins 2011 Australian Singing Competition and Audience Vote

On Sunday 30 October 2011, at the Opera Theatre, Sydney Opera House, Emma Moore, a 23 year old Soprano from Wollongong, NSW was announced winner of the 2011 Australian Singing Competition, Australia’s Richest Singing Competition. Emma was awarded the Marianne Mathy Scholarship presented by The Premier of NSW The Hon Mr Barry O’Farrell MP. The Compere for the evening was Opera Australia Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini.

New Bob Gaudio for Sydney Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys – The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, which opened at Sydney’s Theatre Royal in September 2010, after 14 months in Melbourne, has its closing night on 18 December 2011. From 15 November until closing night, Declan Egan will take over the role of Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio in his professional theatre debut.

Declan joins cast members Bobby Fox (Frankie Valli) Glaston Toft (Nick Massi) and Ben Mingay (Tommy DeVito).

Rock of Ages Sydney Season Postponed

Was three musicals opening in Sydney in early January just one too many? 

Despite having become one of the longest running musicals to be staged at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne and opening to universal critical acclaim, the producers of  Rock of Ages announced today (October 27, 2011) "that, due to the current economic down turn in Australia impacting on single ticket sales in Sydney, the Sydney season of Rock of Ages, scheduled to preview from 11 January 2012, has been postponed." 

La Boite 2012 Season

La Boite Artistic Director David Berthold has announced La Boite’s 2012 Season, “a year that will pull at the heart, stir the blood and tickle the funny bone”.

The 2012 line-up of 10 productions includes five Mainstage productions and five La Boite Indie productions for the Brisbane company.

“We’ve rhymed some Shakespearean joy with summery Scottish charm, layered a mischievous hoax with a spellbinding puppet, and crowned it with melting verses of tender napalm,” David said.

Sam Strong and Australian Plays in the Making.

Sam Strong has only held the artistic reins at Sydney’s Griffin Theatre Company since mid 2010, but after his first season commenced with impressive productions of contemporary Australian classic Speaking in Tongues, and the premiere of new Australian work Silent Disco, Stage Whispers Editor Neil Litchfield sought him out.
