Nice Girls… Don’t Stay For Breakfast
Fantastic Fifties Jazz For Adelaide Fringe 2015
Presenting a collective of fabulous songs made famous by jazz diva Julie London, Fat Lady Productions and singer Steph Acraman will take this year’s Adelaide Fringe patrons on a delightful journey of discovery with Nice Girls…Don’t Stay For Breakfast.
The cabaret-style show also features Acraman’s Many Men band, a group of some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians. They include Dean Barcello, Peter Caputo, Ben Adamson and Anthony Lillywhite, who are well-known to local audiences. They have played in bands such as Lucky Seven, The Memphis Suns, Lady Voodoo, Sunset Lounge and others.
Newly added to Adelaide Fringe venues, The Published Arthouse will be transformed into a lamplit 1950’s underground jazz club for the show, complete with cigarette girls, in-house bar and a Meal and Show cabaret package.
Audiences will hear arrangements of London’s songs, several taken from her debut album Julie is her Name, and a set of interpretations of standards in which Steph Acraman will be accompanied by guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood.
There was a time when Julie London was as famous for her sexy album covers as for her singing. Later in life, she became well known for her TV program The Julie London Show as well as her movie roles and performances in TV shows such as the medical drama Emergency!
Steph Acraman is a multi-talented performer, having begun her career as a dancer. She has graced theatres and stages across Australia and New Zealand, including the Sydney Opera House, the Melbourne Town Hall and the Aotea Centre (NZ).Acraman trained classically as a soprano and has worked worldwide in musical theatre, opera and jazz. In addition to Australia and New Zealand, she has performed in Italy, Singapore, Fiji, Vietnam, Dubai, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Cambodia. She was a founding member of the wartime girl-trio The Belles, singing well-known tunes by The Andrews Sisters, The MacGuire Sisters and the Boswell Sisters. Last year, she brought her original show Pleasure Opera to the Adelaide Fringe.
Critics have praise Nice Girls…Don’t Stay For Breakfast:
“…Nice Girls… Don’t Stay For Breakfast ticked all the boxes for professionalism and audience participation… showcasing Stephanie Acraman’s theatrical pedigree delivered in a 1950’s New York style.”
- George Kaplan, Clothesline.
According to its appreciative Adelaide audiences, Nice Girls…Don’t Stay For Breakfast didn’t stay long enough when it played to full houses during its premiere in November 2014, but now those who missed out have another chance to enjoy it. Once again though, the show has a short season in the 2015 Adelaide Fringe, only three nights, so book early for this delicious jazz odyssey down memory lane.
