Mary Poppins Heads Helpmann Nominations
The Nominees for the 11th Annual Helpmann Awards were announced simultaneously in Sydney and Melbourne tonight (July 4).
Heading the nominations were the big musical theatre productions running around the country. Mary Poppins led the nominations with 12 nominations, followed by Love Never Dies with 10 nominations, while Hairspray and Doctor Zhivago were tied on seven nominations each. The four musicals are competing for the title of Best Musical.
Anthony Warlow (Doctor Zhivago), David Harris (Wicked), Matt Lee (Mary Poppins) and Ben Lewis (Love Never Dies) are nominated for Best Male Actor in a Musical, while Jaz Flowers (Hairspray), Lucy Maunder (Doctor Zhivago), Jemma Rix (Wicked) and Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins) have been nominated as Best Female Actor in a Musical.
The Sydney nomination ceremony, held in the foyer of the Capitol Theatre, was hosted by Jonathan Biggins, while Todd McKenney was MC for the Melbourne event. Amanda Muggleton, Garry Scale, Bobby Fox and Mitchell Butel announced the nominees across 41 categories.
The Helpmann Awards will be presented on Monday August 1, at the Sydney Opera House. It was announced tonight, that in a new agreement with Events NSW, the Helpmanns would be presented in Sydney for the next three years.
The Awards Ceremony will be broadcast live and exclusive on the arts channel STVDIO (Foxtel and Austar) from 8pm, with Red Carpet arrivals from 7.30pm.
The ceremony will include performances by the casts of Doctor Zhivago, Hairspray, Mary Poppins, Love Never Dies, as well as Slava and Leonard Grigoryan, Expressions Dance Theatre, STOMP and Opera Australia.
As previously announced, this year’s J C Williamson Award for lifetime contribution will go to three great J C Wiliamson leading ladies, Jill Perryman, Toni Lamond and Nancye Hayes.
In the dramatic stakes, Sydney’s Belvoir and Sydney Theatre Company dominated, with the STC’s Uncle Vanya and In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play, and Belvoir’s Wild Duck, Measure for Measure and Diary of a Madman all scoring multiple nominations.
Cate Blanchett has been nominated for Best Female Actor in a Play in the Sydney Theatre Company's Uncle Vanya, competing with Ursula Yovich in Waltzing The Wilarra, Robyn Nevin in Long Day's Journey Into Night and Robin McLeavy in Measure For Measure.
Geoffrey Rush has been nominated for Best Male Actor in a Play in Diary Of A Madman, up against Richard Roxburgh in Uncle Vanya, Toby Schmitz in Much Ado About Nothing and Lucas Stibbard in boy girl wall.
Trevor Jones and James Pratt were also announced as joint winners of the Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors, with each to receive a grant of $3,500.
